Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation

FGC is a public health issue as much as it is a human rights and social justice issue. AICS in collaboration with Youth Innovation Empowerment Leadership Development (YIELD) and community religious leaders, is conducting outreach, community education, peer engagement and social media campaigns to highlight the life-long health problems associated with FGC. Through these activities the Somali community is learning that it is not a religious obligation, it is not a Somali tradition but rather came from the Pharoah’s of Egypt, and it is a crime in U.S.

The Somali community has been very receptive to the information and community members are Taking the Pledge to stop this practice in their families and community. You can take the pledge too to show your support for ending this practice and championing girls and women’s health!
